Tax Policy Associates
Tax Policy Associates is a not-for-profit company, founded to improve tax and legal policy, and the public understanding of tax.
We’re a team of experienced tax experts of all kinds: accountants, solicitors, barristers and retired HMRC officials, as well as senior lawyers and other experts such as auditors and forensic accountants.
Tax Policy Associates has four main activities:
- Providing policymakers and politicians of all parties with expert and non-partisan tax policy advice, in the UK and worldwide.
- Analysing and investigating tax and legal policy, often stories that have been under-reported.
- Onvestigating individual instances of legal and tax wrongdoing.
- Assisting journalists, academics and others researching and investigating tax and tax policy.

Who funds us?
All our contributors provide their time pro bono. We have no employees, no premises and keep costs to an absolute minimum. This means that our activities require only a small amount of funding (which is provided personally by Dan Neidle).
We therefore accept no donations, charge no fees, and undertake no commercial work. Dan himself undertakes no commercial work. This enables us to remain entirely independent.

Our founder: Dan Neidle
Dan Neidle spent 25 years as a tax lawyer, and was head of tax at Clifford Chance in London. During his career, Dan advised corporates, governments, regulators, central banks and NGOs on tax and tax policy.
Dan founded Tax Policy Associates in 2022. To avoid potential conflicts, he undertakes no commercial work, and all his personal fees for writing and speaking are donated to charities and local community causes.
Dan’s work with Tax Policy Associates in 2023 won the Tolley’s award for the “Outstanding Contribution to Taxation”, and “investigation of the year” at the British Journalism Awards. In 2024, Dan won the John Stokdyk Outstanding Contribution to Accounting award. In 2025, Dan was listed by International Tax Review as one of the 50 most noteworthy tax figures worldwide. In 2026 he was shortlisted for “specialist journalism” in the British Journalism Awards.
Dan is a member of the IFS Tax Law Review Committee, the Africa-Europe Foundation‘s Illicit Financial Flow working group, and was a member of the Scottish Government’s advisory group on tax strategy.
Dan is a member of the Chartered Institute of Journalists and the National Union of Journalists.
